Two things you'll need to make 2019 your year!
Ahhh, the New Year: a time for personal reflection and new beginnings. For many, it means a New Year’s Resolution. What time is more perfect to take action than when you’ve got a clean slate with last year behind you and an untarnished new year ahead? But why should January 1st, 2019 be different than any other day that has already passed by in 2018, or is yet to come in 2019? In reality it’s not. It’s just a convenient rationalization for procrastination. Rather than mark one point in time as the day you turn some aspect of your life around, greet each day with a renewed commitment to your goals. Beginning an exercise program (or making a fresh start) is an excellent way to start the New Year. Regular exercise of any variety can greatly improve your health and quality of life, helping you remain independent as you age. By mentally preparing yourself, make this the year you achieve your goals in a way that will allow you to make fitness a lifestyle habit.
Statistics show that 50% of those beginning a new exercise program drop out within 6 months. What differentiates the other 50% who are successful? Mindset! Typically, we jump right into changing our lifestyle, eating differently, and exercising without giving much consideration to how we think. While we struggle to force ourselves to perform new behaviours, our mind works against us, still thinking old thoughts. It is our habitual patterns of thinking that have put us where we are today. If you want to change your life, you must start by changing your mind! Successful people in any life endeavour (fitness included) have nurtured the proper mental skills and attitude necessary to succeed. And so can you! Following are two prerequisites of success that will help prepare your mind to re-create your body (or any aspect of your life).
1. Make a conscious decision to change!
It’s one thing to just talk about changing and it’s a completely different thing to decide to actually do it. You see, when you make a conscious decision to change, your mind awakens and starts searching for a way. You begin to develop a feeling – a deeply rooted need to make it happen. That sensation is what many people call desire. Before you know it, you’ll crave that change all day and all night – the desire becomes a burning desire. When you decide you’re not going to go on living the way you’re living, when you decide the way things were last year is not the way they’re going to be this year, you’ve taken the first step.
2. Find a reason!
It’s one thing to tell yourself you’d like to get fit this year. It’s a whole other matter to think of the most dreadful thing imaginable happening if you do not get control of your body and life, pronto! It’s having a reason that fuels the intense desire and power (the inspiration) for getting started and for following through. Please make sure you clearly identify your reason for deciding to change, write it down, and read it every morning and night. A strong enough why can overcome any how!
In Your Moments of Decision Your Destiny is Shaped. The choice is up to you. Don't ask for it to be easy, just ask for it to be worth it. And remember, if you keep doing exactly what you are doing now, where will YOU be in January 2020?
